Speed wins: getting FedEx driver candidates through First Advantage faster
Where the First Advantage process stalls for FedEx Ground contractors and the five habits that cut days off it.
Why it takes 7 to 21 days
First Advantage runs the background check, motor vehicle record, drug screen and, for FedEx Ground, the DOT medical card verification. Each piece depends on an outside party: county courts, state DMVs, the collection site and the clinic. A candidate with a clean record who lives in one state can clear in four days; a driver with addresses in three states and a weekend drug-screen appointment can take three weeks.
1. Get the authorized-user paperwork in on day one
Nobody can order a screen until First Advantage has approved an authorized user on the contractor account. If you work with a recruiter, submit the add-user form the day you sign. First Advantage can approve it in a day; it can also take two weeks, and nothing moves until it clears.
2. Authorize the same day you decide
Candidates who get the First Advantage invitation within hours of the phone screen complete it at a far higher rate than those who wait for a weekly batch. Decide after the screen, not on Friday.
3. Book the drug screen and DOT physical together
For FedEx Ground drivers, pairing the collection and the DOT physical at one clinic visit removes the most common missed appointment. Ask the candidate for two windows and book the first one that works.
4. Chase the candidate, not the vendor
Most delays are the candidate not finishing the online consent, not uploading an ID or missing the collection window. A text the same afternoon ("did the First Advantage email arrive?") solves most of it.
5. Keep a line waiting
Peak and turnover do not wait for processing. Keep two or three screened candidates authorized at all times so a no-show at the road test does not cost you a month.
Does the contractor pay for First Advantage?
For FedEx Ground contractors the screening package is covered by FedEx under the contractor agreement; the contractor pays nothing per candidate. Amazon DSPs run screening through their Amazon-approved provider on their own account.
Can a recruiter order the screen for me?
Yes, once First Advantage approves the recruiter as an authorized user on your account. That approval is the step that can take up to two weeks.
Need road-test-ready drivers?
